Tomoya Tsukamoto’s First Solo Exhibition in Tokyo in 13 Years — His Largest to Date
Artist : Tomoya Tsukamoto
Born in 1982 in Ishikawa Prefecture, and currently based in Kanagawa, Tomoya Tsukamoto is an active figure in the contemporary art scene. His practice is characterized by the use of an airbrush to apply countless ultra-fine dots, creating visual effects reminiscent of pointillism, while also incorporating dripping techniques and light, fluid brushstrokes to develop his distinctive painterly language.
Tsukamoto’s signature approach involves layering red, blue, and yellow—the three primary colors—so that the viewer’s retina blends them optically, dissolving the boundary between figure and ground. Drawing inspiration from motifs such as cherry blossoms, koi fish, human silhouettes, and deer, his work explores cycles of light and shadow, life and death. In recent years, he has incorporated real plants as stencils and used negative/positive inversion techniques to reinterpret Georges Seurat’s color theory alongside the decorative sensibility of the Japanese Rinpa school, all through a contemporary lens. His paintings balance the intricacy of Japanese "kazari" aesthetics with a minimalist production process, inviting viewers into an immersive and contemplative visual experience.
“Journey of Encounters” is Tsukamoto’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 13 years and represents his most expansive presentation to date. “Within everyday life lie countless unexpected encounters,” Tsukamoto says. “This exhibition attempts to visualize those fleeting intersections — like shimmering light or a passing breeze.”
First Stop in Taipei 「Voices 2025」Draws Wide Acclaim
Tomoya Tsukamoto’s artworks becomes immersive installation format.
The exhibition debuted at “Voices 2025” in Taipei, where ADMIRA Gallery presented his work in an immersive installation format. Moving beyond the confines of wall-mounted painting, the display garnered strong praise from collectors and press across Taiwan and abroad, including features in ARTouch、Art Emperor、Taipei Times 。
Tsukamoto has been exclusively represented by ADMIRA Gallery for over a decade. Over the years, his techniques have continued to evolve and mature, bringing greater refinement and resonance to his work. With a memorable and singular aesthetic identity, his art has firmly established its presence in the international arena.
Chad Liu, General Manager of Designsurfing and ADMIRA Gallery, shares: “Since the pandemic, the global art market has experienced a major shift—from close market to public, becoming to entertainment-driven consumption. Now toward a new mapping of global dynamics. While Europe and the US remain important, we are witnessing a clear momentum from major Western galleries repositioning themselves with Tokyo and Seoul as their new Asia hubs. For galleries today, integrating online and offline platforms has become a critical strategic issue.”
The journey of Tomoya Tsukamoto’s Asia Tour continues with the highly anticipated Tokyo stop, opening July 5. What new works will be revealed? We await with excitement.
